On 3 December, the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) expressed deep concern about the repeal of the anti-migration law in Niger. According to the commission, this will encourage human trafficking networks and lead to a sharp increase in illegal migration into Libya. It stressed this expected wave of migration could also make it easier for members of terrorist organizations to enter Libya, adding Niger’s decision undermines Libya’s efforts in the fight against illegal migration and to secure the border with Niger. The NCHRL has complained about the Libyan authorities’ ‘silence’ regarding this step by Niger. It called on the Libyan authorities to talk to their counterparts in Niger and get them to reconsider the repeal of this law, as this will have a negative impact on bilateral cooperation, security and stability in the region.
