GNU hosts conference on legal migration and employment

On 27 and 28 November, the Government of National Unity (GNU) hosted an international conference on legal migration in Tripoli under the title ‘A Safe Mediterranean, a Stable South’ to discuss targeted legal labour migration to Libya. The event was attended by representatives from 20 Arab and African countries as well as European ambassadors and international officials. In his speech, Prime Minister Abdul Hameed Dabaiba stressed the need for cooperation and solidarity, and to increase economic and security cooperation between the ‘coastal and desert countries’. Dabaiba hasindicated that his government is seriously seeking to include immigrants and integrate them into the economy.

In his speech to the conference, the EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando praised Libya’s key role in regulating employment in developing countries by creating training and qualification opportunities for African workers in their countries through cooperation with the EU and countries affected by migration. He also stressed the importance of regulating work and travel visas to help with the regulation of employment.
