26 August – 1 September: Suspected failed suicide bombing
On 1 September, a suspected failed suicide bombing occurred close to a GNA-aligned checkpoint in western Tripoli.
26 August – 1 September: US and UN co-chair Libya meeting
On 27 August, the US and UN co-chaired a meeting regarding the Berlin Process on Libya. On 30 August, the head of the Arab League, Aboul-Gheit, met with Acting Head of UNSMIL, Williams. On 29 August Williams, arrived in Cairo for a three-day visit to engage with various officials on the Libya crisis. On 28 August, Turkey announced that it would undertake military exercises off the northwest coast of Cyprus.
26 August – 1 September: PM Serraj suspends MoI Bashaagha
On 28 August, GNA Prime Minister and head of the PC Fayez al-Serraj announced that he was suspending Interior Minister Fathi Bashaagha.
19 – 25 August: UNSG assesses ISIL still a threat in Libya
On 20 August, a British court sentenced 22-year old Hashem Abedi, the brother of Manchester Area bomber Salman Abedi, to jail for at least 55 years for the murder of 22 people. On 25 August, Assistant Secretary General Coninsx briefed the UNSC on the UNSG’s 11th ISIL report.

19 – 25 August: OHCHR appoints members of fact-finding mission
On 19 August, the OHCHR appointed three members of the independent fact-finding mission for Libya.
19 – 25 August: Ceasefire announcements by GNA and HoR
On 21 August, the GNA announced a nationwide ceasefire. The speaker of the HoR, Saleh, reiterated the call for a ceasefire along similar terms. On 23 August, the LNA spokesperson, al-Mismari, labelled the GNA’s effort as a ‘marketing stunt’ while not commenting on the HoR statement. Also on 23 August, multiple protests occurred throughout the western region, specifically in Tripoli and in Zawiyya.
12 – 18 August: LNA claims ISIS killings and captures in Southern Libya
On 16 August, the LNA claimed to have killed three ISIS-Libya fighters in Ghadduwa. On 12 August, a military operation in the Murzuq region led to the arrest of ‘suspected’ ISIS Libya affiliates.
