Judicial Police reject al-Sareea’s appointment as new agency head

Tensions have continued this week between Rada and the Judicial Police on one side, and PM Abdul Hameed Dabaiba and pro-Dabaiba groups on the other.

Members of the Judicial Police – which is closely aligned to the Special Deterrence Force (Rada) – have strongly rejected the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) decision No. 442 of 2025 to appoint Ali Eshtiwi aka al-Sareea, a close ally of Dabaiba, as the new head of the agency, replacing Sabri Muhammad Hadiya. In a joint statement, they expressed concern over the lack of legal justification and the timing of the move, warning it could disrupt the agency’s judicial and security functions. They emphasized that the Judicial Police is a neutral institution tasked with enforcing justice and must remain free from political or regional interference, calling for the decision to be reviewed to preserve the agency’s stability, independence, and operational integrity. [O-B2] Eshtiwi formally took up his role as head of the Judicial Police on 29 June.

In addition, on 26 June Rada released a video revealing details on the abduction of Colonel Abu Ajila al Habshi – a well-respected military officer from Tarhouna who fought against Qadhafi in 2011 – in southern Tripoli in 2012. He is believed to have been abducted by Misratan hardliners.
