IOM condemns violence against migrants

On 9 October, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) issued a statement condemning the killing of six migrants and at least 24 injured during a chaotic episode the previous day at the Mabani detention centre in Tripoli. IOM Chief of Mission Frederico Soda attributed the event to the problem of overcrowding but added ‘We don’t know what triggered the incident.’ Reuters reported that unauthenticated videos had shown dozens of people pushing through a gap in the fence at the centre and marching on the Tripoli streets, and that residents had reported seeing ‘large numbers’ of migrants running through the streets in that area.
