On 22 December, the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) issued a formal statement delaying the first round of the presidential elections past 24 December 2021. The statement said that the House of Representatives (HoR) will set another date for voting within 30 days, while HNEC proposed the presidential elections be postponed to 24 January 2022. The statement referenced the various technical and legal difficulties and challenges in carrying out the elections but insisted the technical preparations were in place to carry them out. However, no direct mention was made about when the final list of presidential candidates was expected to be published.
