On the evening of 2 June, there were violent clashes in Zawiyya between rival militias following the arrest of notorious militia leader and smuggler Abdu al-Kabu, who is wanted by the Attorney General. Only a few hours after his arrest, militias aligned to al-Kabu (the ‘Kabawat’ militias) were able to free him, though it is unclear whether he was freed on route to Janzour prison (west of Tripoli on the road to Zawiyya) or from the prison itself. Clashes then erupted reportedly between the Kabawat and the Government of National Unity (GNU)-aligned 52 Brigade led by Mahmoud Bin Rajab, resulting in at least one person being killed (a fighter belonging to the al-Far militia, led by PM Abdul Hameed Dabaiba’s ally Muhammed Baroun).
