On 30 April, the office of the Attorney General linked the murder of Brigadier General Ali Ramadan al Rayani to a failed armed robbery. Before, there were some – false – rumors that this was a failed attempt by the 444 Brigade to detain the General and to hand him over to the US for trial over his alleged involvement in the SCUD-missile attacks on an American base on the island of Lampedusa in 1986.
