On 2 May before midnight, a militia from Misrata raided the HQ of the (HoR-appointed) National Reconciliation Forum in Khoms near the al-Naqaza Hotel, where the preparations for a meeting of the Forum the next day were underway.
The attackers expelled those present from the building. A member of the Khoms Criminal Investigation Department was shot and killed. He was onsite to provide security to the event. At least one more person, a young volunteer working for the National Reconciliation Forum, was wounded by gunfire and transported to the emergency room of a hospital nearby.
The attackers belonged to the 112th (Misrata) Brigade, the so called ‘Marinda Force’, which is affiliated with the Joint Operations Force. They arrived in a convoy of about 60 armed vehicles.
On 3 May in the early morning, citizens of Khoms gathered in front of the local Security Directorate and demanded its intervention to apprehend those involved in the assault. Thereafter, protesters closed the coastal road. They held the Dabaiba government and its Ministry of Interior, who gave their prior approval for the meeting of the National Reconciliation Forum, responsible for the attack.
In the morning, the Municipal Council of Khoms condemned the attack and called on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to urgently intervene, to punish those involved and to provide justice to the residents of Khoms. Furthermore, it called on the Khoms Security Directorate to quickly take all necessary measures to identify the perpetrators and to request support from the MoI to deal with them.
