The UNSMIL sponsored peace talks went ahead in Ghadames on 29 September and surprisingly heralded an agreement of sorts. The talks that brought together twelve representatives from the HoR and twelve of those MPs who are boycotting it concluded in a statement which declared that a ceasefire was needed both in the west and the east of Libya and that the airports should be re-opened and the injured treated. The participants also agreed to resume their talks after the Eid holiday.
Operation Libya Dawn made clear its objections to the talks right from the start, as did the Dar Al-Ifta – the country’s supreme official religious body – which issued a statement calling on those boycotters of the House to suspend their participation in the dialogue.
