US includes Libya on travel ban list

On 9 June, a new executive order signed by US President Donald Trump went into effect barring nationals from Libya from entering the United States. It also targets Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, labelling these countries as posing significant security risks due to terrorism, poor identity verification systems, or lack of cooperation with US authorities. In Libya’s case, the White House justified the full suspension of travel by citing the absence of a central, reliable passport authority and the country’s history of terrorist activity. This lack of governmental control, it argued, undermines the ability to screen travellers effectively, thus posing a high security threat.
