On 16 April, the International Mine Action Awareness Day, a high-level event was held at Sports City in Tripoli. The event was jointly organized by UNSMIL and the Libyan Mine Action Centre (LibMAC), along with various national and international mine action organizations. Its purpose was to raise awareness about the dangers posed by mines and explosive remnants of war across Libya and to underscore the urgent need for continued demining efforts, risk education, and strategic planning.

A principal focus of the discussions was the alarming data from the Libyan Mine Action Centre. Aeneas Chuma, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, emphasized that hundreds of millions of square metres of land in Libya have already been identified as hazardous areas, with even more expected to be added. He warned that in some areas, such as those buried under rubble, the risk to residents is especially high and stressed the need for continued demining and risk education to ensure the safe mobility of communities, families, and children.
