On 17 January, Sudanese media reported a series of intense airstrikes in North Darfur, ‘near the border with Libya’. The Sudanese Air Force struck several Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targets at El Zurug military base in the Kutum district in Northern Darfur. Several vehicles and some buildings were destroyed.

This was only the third airstrike on the base – the last one took place in September 2023. Allegedly, at least nine people were killed, five wounded.

Furthermore, the airport of the capital of Western Darfur Al Junaynah was attacked in what were the first airstrikes on this region since the beginning of the war.
