On 1 August, as an envoy of his father, Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar, Chief of Staff of LNA Ground Forces Saddam Khalifa Haftar made a brief visit to Chad´s capital N’Djamena. After an official reception ceremony, he met with President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno in the Presidential Palace. Over the course of their two-hour meeting, the two leaders engaged in extensive discussions focused on addressing common issues and improving bilateral relations. Central to the talks was the speedy reopening of the shared border between Libya and Chad, which should help restoring cross-border trade. A major talking point was the establishment of an overland route connecting Chad to Egypt via Libyan territory, with both sides recognizing the economic benefits such a corridor could bring.
The status of Chadian nationals currently detained in Libya and strengthening security measures in the border region, as well as migration management, were also discussed by Déby and Saddam Haftar. They examined plans to stabilize the border region, which is considered by both a source of instability. Déby praised the longstanding historical and cultural ties between the Libyan and Chadian people, and reaffirmed Chad’s support for ongoing peace efforts in Libya.
