On 17 April, there was a shootout in Kufra which injured a Zwai man and a Tebu man and resulted in two vehicles being burned. While the motives behind the incident remain unclear, the violence quickly spread across different parts of the town.

On 18 April, in the morning, there was another shooting in the passenger lounge at Kufra airport against the Tebu man injured the day before, who was on his way to Benghazi for treatment, and those travelling with him. This resulted in two more Tebu individuals being injured, one seriously.

The Kufra Security Directorate requested a neutral peacekeeping force from Benghazi to implement a security plan in the town and at the airport.

The Zwai and Tebu council of elders and reconciliation committees have made no statement or comment on the incident so far. However, the family of the injured Zwai man issued a statement stating that he is a soldier in the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Subul al-Salam’s Light Infantry Brigade and claiming he was specifically ambushed and targeted because he has arrested smugglers as part of his official duties.
