Operation Libya Dawn forces took Tripoli airport on 23 August and are now in control of the capital. Islamist forces also appear to be closing in on Operation Dignity forces in Benghazi. Although the fight is far from finished and further attacks and clashes are to be expected, it is clear that Haftar is unable to achieve his objectives or to gain the upper hand. This means that Libya is all but in the position of having Islamist forces in control of both its main cities.
Benghazi Revolutionaries Shura Council appear to be gaining ground. These forces still have the upper hand and although Operation Dignity denied reports this week that the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shura Council had taken control of the Benina Airbase, they seem to be closing in on it. Thus although the fight is not over yet and the violence in the city will continue, it is looking as though Libya could well be in the position of having Islamist forces in control in both Tripoli and Benghazi as well as most of the country’s main airports, Tobruq excluded.
