On 7 October, EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando held an ‘in-depth exchange’ in Tripoli with Admiral Reda Issa, Commander of the Libyan Coast Guard. They reviewed the European Union’s support to Libya’s efforts to save lives at sea and combat human smuggling, as well as reports of recent incidents at sea. They focused on ‘ensuring full compliance with Libyan and international law in Search and Rescue operations.’ Their discussions also addressed ways to strengthen operational effectiveness, accountability, and humane migration management. They agreed to continue dialogue and coordination within the framework of the Technical Mission on Rights-based Migration and Border Management.
