On 28 February, the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) urged the immediate release of people detained during the recent peaceful protests in Tripoli, saying security forces from several state bodies carried out arbitrary arrests targeting citizens exercising their right to assembly.

The organization held the Government of National Unity (GNU) responsible for the detainees’ safety, warned against any mistreatment or denial of due process, and stressed that freedom of expression and peaceful protest are protected under Libyan and international law. The NIHRL called for an end to repressive measures, transparent disclosure of detainee numbers and legal grounds, and investigations into reported violations amid growing concerns over the authorities’ handling of recurring politically and economically driven demonstrations.
