New UN Special Envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily assumes his duties

On 28 September, the UN announced that Senegalese political and diplomat, Abdoulaye Bathily, had officially assumed his duties as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission Libya (UNSMIL) on 25 September. According to the UN statement, Bathily will be based in Libya and be supported by Raisedon Zenenga (Assistant Secretary-General and Mission Coordinator, UNSMIL) and Georgette Denise Gagnon (Assistant Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, UNSMIL). Prior to arriving in Libya, SRSG Bathily undertook several meetings with UN officials and other representatives in New York, including Libya’s representative to the UN, Taher al-Sunni. Bathily is expected to hold meetings with officials and representatives in Tripoli in October.
