On 11 February, UNHCR said it is alarmed by the discovery of two mass graves found at trafficking sites in Libya’s desert—19 bodies in Ejkherra (south of Benghazi) and at least 28 bodies north of al-Kufra. Alkufra is the main entry point for refugees entering Libya from Sudan. UNHCR said these tragedies highlight the urgent need to protect vulnerable lives.
This came after Libyan authorities announced the discoveries of the two mass graves on 9 February. The same day, authorities said they freed 76 migrants from the trafficking centre in al-Kufra and arrested three people — a Libyan and two foreigners — on suspicion of detaining and torturing migrants.
