The fighting in Tripoli has created a high death toll and a significant amount of damage to infrastructure and property, as well as increased theft and looting. There have also been discoveries of bodies and mass graves in previously Stability Support Agency (SSA)-controlled areas. According to unconfirmed figures, so far at least 70 people have been killed and many more wounded, though there are figures as high as 170 people killed. No official figures have been released.
Damage from the fighting and from looting by armed groups and civilians is extensive, with damages sustained to houses, shops, cars, military vehicles and more. Several high-value cars were stolen from Tripoli port and several animals at the Zoo, located in the SSA’s territory, were deliberately shot and killed while others were stolen. The Government of National Unity (GNU) has said it is clearing up all sites and launching investigations into the incidents, with plans to issue compensation to those affected. The 444 Brigade announced that a mass grave was discovered inside a SSA base in Abu Salim. So far, ten bodies have been recovered.
On 17 May, nine corpses were found in a morgue refrigerator in Al-Khadra hospital. The Ministry of Interior said on 19 May that at least 58 unidentified corpses were found in a morgue refrigerator in Abu Salim Accidents Hospital. The Ministry of Interior said an investigation was underway to establish the identities of the deceased. ‘So far, 23 corpses have been examined, and all necessary legal procedures have been taken, including documenting data and collecting samples,’ the ministry said.
