On 4 August, the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) issued a statement condemning ‘hostile acts’ aiming to undermine stability along the Sirte-Misrata coastal road. The statement was apparently in response to an incident in which football fans laid down images of Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar on the road so motorists would drive over them on their way to a football match. On 7 August, the former Volcano of Rage (VoR) operation – the western region forces which fought against the LNA in the 2019-20 Tripoli conflict – accused the LNA-aligned 604 Brigade of breaking the October 2020 ceasefire by expelling the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) Ministry of Interior security forces from Sirte and looting their vehicles at checkpoint 30, west of Sirte.
