On 27 February in the evening after the last Ramadan prayer, protesters gathered in central Tripoli, at first at Algeria Square and later on also at Martyr’s Square, expressing their discontent with worsening living conditions and demanding the removal of all existing political authorities in Libya. They blamed all rival political bodies, including the Presidential Council and the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), for corruption, economic collapse, the crash of the dinar, and rising prices. They called for early elections and a new, unified authority, replacing both the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) and the Benghazi-based Government of National Stability (GNS). Some protesters also called for the departure of all foreign forces and the closing of all foreign military bases on Libyan territory.

After midnight, a few hundred protesters moved to the PM Office at al-Sikka Road to continue their protest there. They were dispersed by the PM’s security forces using live ammunition and tear gas. About a dozen people were detained. There are rumors that a number of people were wounded by gunshots, including a former leader of the Stability Support Agency (SSA).

There were also demonstrations in several other parts of Tripoli, including next to the al-Waddan hotel, at the Dahra roundabout. Several streets were blocked with burning tires. Altogether, about 3,000 to 4,000 people participated in the protests throughout the city.

On the same evening, there were also protests against the government in Janzour (in front of Palm City), Zawiyya, Misrata, Sabratha, al-Ailat, and Raqdalin. About 300 people participated in Zliten.
