On 17 June, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported the death of six migrants and the disappearance of 60 more on the attempt to cross from Libya to Europe during the first week of June. During the same period, 635 migrants departing from Tripoli, Zawiyya and Sabratha were intercepted and returned to Libya. In total, since the beginning of the year, 249 migrants departing from Libya have died in the sea, 226 are missing, and 10,634 were returned to Libya.
According to the Italian Ministry of Interior, so far this year, 29,059 illegal migrants have arrived in Italy, compared with 24,893 during the same period last year. While the monthly figures were below those of 2024 until March, numbers increased sharply from April. However, the number of arrivals is still far below 2023, when 60,262 people had arrived in the same period. The most important countries of origin were Bangladesh (9,583), Eritrea (4,119), Egypt (3,344), and Pakistan (2,569). Syria was just ranked 6th (1,080).
