On 3 November, the Government of National Unity (GNU) said that a high-level delegation visited Lebanon, where it was received by the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The delegation comprised Minister of State for Communications and Political Affairs Walid al-Lafi, the General Prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice Ali Ashtiwi, and the political and security adviser to the PM (and his nephew) Ibrahim Dabaiba. The GNU framed the meeting as being part of effort to strengthen Libya’s relations with Arab countries. It said the delegation discussed ways to develop relations between the two countries, ensure the resumption of diplomatic relations and expand the areas of political, economic and judicial cooperation in order to serve the common interests of the Libyan and Lebanese people.
In a media statement, al-Lafi confirmed that the talks took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere, and that a number of pending files between the two countries are expected to be resolved in the near future, indicating that there is a growing understanding on some long-standing issues. It is understood that the main focus of the meeting was on the release of Hannibal Qadhafi, the son of former leader Muammar Qadhafi who has been incarcerated in Lebanon since 2015 without trial.
