On 18 September, Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar arrived for an official visit in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. At the forefront of Haftar’s discussions with senior Saudi officials were security and political developments in Libya, the role of the LNA, and regional issues of mutual interest, particularly the conflict in Sudan. The humanitarian and security implications of this conflict for neighbouring countries such as Libya were discussed in depth.

The visit coincided with the Saudi Cabinet’s announcement of a joint statement by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States on 12 September. The statement aims to restore peace and security in Sudan.
