On 20 September, General Gennaro Vecchione, former commander of Italy’s Guardia di Finanza and former coordinator of Italy’s intelligence services, visited Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar on behalf of the Italian government to discuss the situation in the eastern disaster area and the assistance needed.
On 21 September, Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM) General Michael Langley and US Special Envoy Richard Norland and their entourage met with Haftar in Al Rajma. During the meeting, the Americans addressed the importance of forming a democratically elected national government, reuniting the Libyan military, fighting terror, and preserving Libyan sovereignty by removing foreign mercenaries, particularly Russian ones.
