Greek FM discusses Libyan-Turkish maritime MoU with Haftar in Libya

On 6 July, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met with Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Haftar in al-Rajma. At the beginning of the meeting, the minister conveyed a message from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, emphasizing the historical and geographical ties between the two nations and Greece’s commitment to a stable and prosperous Mediterranean. Discussions during the one-hour meeting focused on managing irregular migration flows from Libya to Crete, maritime jurisdiction issues in the Eastern Mediterranean, and strengthening bilateral cooperation. Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s commitment to a ‘steady and constructive relationship’ with Libya. Haftar emphasized the depth of relations between the two countries and the importance of developing them.

In addition to his meeting with Khalifa Haftar, Gerapetritis met with Belqassim Haftar, Director of the Libya Development & Reconstruction Fund. Belqassim extended an invitation to Greek companies to participate in Libya’s post-conflict reconstruction, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and logistics. Gerapetritis praised the urban development underway in Libyan cities and expressed Greece’s readiness to contribute to the country’s recovery through strategic partnerships.
