After the delegation of EU ministers and the European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner was turned away from Benghazi on 8 July and forced to leave the country, the Europeans and Libyans have been regrouping and reacting.
On 9 July, the Greek government announced it is suspending the processing of asylum applications, initially for three months, for those arriving in Greece from North Africa by sea. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told the European Commission that, ‘an emergency situation requires emergency measures.’ Any migrant entering Greece illegally will be arrested and detained until they are returned to their country of origin.
