Aug 5, 2025 | International actors

On 5 August, the Greek government delivered a note verbale to the UN Secretary General responding to the Libyan note of 20 June 2025, which was revealed on 13 July. In this note, Greece rejects in full the Libyan claims regarding the alleged violation of Libya´s sovereign rights from the licensing of two blocks south of Crete. Athens emphasized that, according to the Law of the Sea, these maritime blocks are within the Greek continental shelf/EEZ and therefore fall under Greek jurisdiction. The blocks were delineated based on the median line between Greece and Libya, consistent with the partial EEZ delimitation agreement between Greece and Egypt.
