After the Presidential Council (PC) issued a decision replacing Hussein al-Aib as head of the Libyan Intelligence Service (LIS) with Abdul Majid al-Mleqta last week, the Government of National Unity (GNU) and High State Council (HSC) have welcomed Mleqta and he has engaged in high-level international meetings.
GNU PM Abdul Hameed Dabaiba welcomed the appointment of Mleqta, officially meeting with him on 30 June in his capacity as head of the Libyan Intelligence Service and discussing updates on the agency’s operations and duties.
The following day, on 1 July, HSC head Muhammed Takala and members of the HSC National Security Committee also met with Mleqta, discussing the latest political and security developments in the country, as well as a number of issues related to national security. Discussions highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination among state institutions to support stability, safeguard national security, and confront challenges affecting the national interest.
On 2 July, several LIS officers and members issued a statement welcoming the removal of al-Aib (in contrast with a statement by a different group of LIS members who rejected it), saying it was a brave decision and a long-awaited corrective step.
