On 30 March, Germany announced it would no longer provide training to Libya’s coast guard due to concerns over the treatment of migrants. Andrea Sasse, a spokesperson for Germany’s Foreign Ministry said that it could no longer justify the training of the Libyan coast guard in view of the ‘repeated unacceptable behaviour by individual units of the Libyan coast guard toward refugees and migrants, and also toward non-governmental organizations’. Sasse said that at least two incidents that occurred in July 2021 were of particular concern to Germany.
