Libya’s Attorney General Sadiq al-Sour has held several meetings with European ambassadors and officials over the last two weeks, with discussions focusing on combating human smuggling and info-sharing with Operation Irini.
On 10 July, a new meeting of the Technical Mission on Rights-based Migration and Border Management in Tripoli between EU and Libyan officials. The European delegation included representatives of the Directorate General for Immigration and Internal Affairs, the EU External Action Service, EUBAM Libya, Frontex, and Operation EUNAVRFOR Med Irini. According to the EU, the meeting discussed ongoing cooperation and progress, and identified concrete next joint actions on border management support, anti-smuggling and anti-trafficking, increasing voluntary returns to the origin countries with IOM support, support to Libyan authorities responsible for saving lives at sea and in the desert, and for humane treatment of migrants, support to Sudanese refugees and to Libyan communities affected by migrants, and enhanced cooperation with UN agencies.
