On 19 June, an explosion at a temporary electrical unit in Derna caused a fire and significant power outages across several key areas of the city. According to local authorities, the incident occurred in a high-voltage ring unit at the Milad Badr station, located near the city port. The explosion led to a major fire that severely damaged cables and electrical equipment. As a result, power was cut off from multiple vital districts including the port area, the amusement park, seafront neighbourhoods, Army Street, and nearby areas. Technical maintenance teams set to repair the infrastructure.
On 21 June, Power Station No. 1 (30/11 kV) located in the Ard Azwawa area in Benghazi experienced an explosion followed by a massive fire, the cause of which is yet to be determined.
On the same day, the director of the power station in Marj, Hussein Boussif, made an urgent appeal to the Government of National Stability (GNS) and the Libya Reconstruction and Development Fund after the city’s main station caught fire leaving Marj in near-total darkness for five days. Boussif emphasised that the situation is extremely critical, as the city is currently being operated by old transformers that lack protection systems, putting equipment and the lives of technicians at imminent risk.
Still on 21 June, the Marawa area found itself in a state of complete blackout due to a technical fault in the main (66/11 kV) transformer at the city’s station. According to rumours, recent attempts to repair the fault by technical teams have failed, confirming that the transformer requires a complete replacement – a process that could take between 5 and 10 days, provided a replacement transformer is available.
