Derna court sentences 12 officials over dam collapse

On 28 July, the Attorney General said that the Derna Criminal Court has issued a verdict convicting twelve officials responsible for managing the country’s dam facilities, in relation to the devastating floods in Derna in September 2023 when the dams collapsed, killed thousands of people. Four other officials were acquitted. Of the twelve charged, sentences ranged from nine years in prison to twenty-six years in prison, with all instructed to pay ‘blood money’ for their crimes. Several were also ordered to return the money obtained from illegal gains.
