On 25 March, Major General Hatem al-Ghaib, commander of the Western Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department, survived an assassination attempt while he was driving in his car in the Abu Sura area, about 9 km southeast of the center of Zawiyya. His car came under heavy gunfire as he was leaving Abu Sura. Additionally, an explosive bag was placed on the rear of his car.
The attackers belong to a militia from Zawiyya, the 1st Support Force (Esnad), which is led by Muhammed Bahroun aka al-Far.
In the evening, heavy fighting erupted near the al-Daman traffic light in Zawiyya. Several vehicles were destroyed. a number of fighters were wounded. Militias of the Awlad al-Saqr and the Awlad Abu Hmeira fought against al-Far’s First Support Force. Activists called for demonstrations demanding the end of the dominance of the militias in Zawiyya and the restoration of the rule of law.
