On 21 February, the US President Joe Biden extended the ‘national emergency’ declared in Libya for another year from 25 February 2024. The national emergency was first declared on 25 February 2011 and expanded on 19 April 2016. The White House notice said that ‘The situation in Libya continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, and measures are needed to protect against the diversion of assets or other abuses by members of Qadhafi’s family, their associates, and other persons hindering Libyan national reconciliation.’
