On 2 September, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that the Senegalese politician and diplomat Abdoulaye Bathily had been appointed as the new Special Representative for Libya and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Bathily replaced former Special Envoy Jan Kubis, who stepped down from the role in December 2021.
