Bathily and Trabelsi discuss security situation

On 7 September, United Nations Special Envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily met with Minister of Interior Emad Trabelsi to discuss the security situation and the ongoing efforts to preserve stability. Bathily said he emphasized the importance of engaging various security institutions and leaders in order to achieve peaceful elections and expressed his concerns about ‘the growing violations of citizens’ rights.’ Bathily stressed that political and security leaders should act to protect the Libyan people in accordance with the commitments made in the meetings in Tunis, Tripoli and Benghazi. According to the Government of National Unity (GNU), Trabelsi confirmed the MoI’s readiness to secure and protect elections at the national level while Bathily praised the MoI’s positive impact on the security situation. They also discussed othersecurity topics, including the illegal immigration file, border protection, combating organized crime, and the ministry’s efforts maintain security and stability through its security plan.
