On 24 February, the Attorney General Sadiq al-Sour ordered the arrest of the General Manager of the General National Maritime Transport Company (GNMTC), Khaled al-Tawati, on charges of corruption and mismanagement.
This comes nearly a month after al-Tawati was kidnapped/ arrested on 31 January. The Attorney General’s Office said al-Tawati had caused turmoil in the company’s financial affairs and was negligent in managing the company and its contracts, as well as causing serious damage to public funds amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars and making illegal gains for himself.
On 25 February, the GNMTC thanked the AG for revealing the fate of its General Manager, noting he has been ‘forcibly hidden since 31 January 2024.’ The company announced that it will cooperate fully with the AG regarding the allegations of corruption and waste against al-Tawati, stressing that the GNMTC is always committed and cooperative in facilitating all administrative, financial and technical audits.
