On 11 April, the Public Prosecutor in Tripoli acquitted Libyan coastguard officer Abdul Rahman Milad, better known as ‘al-Bija’, of involvement in human smuggling and fuel smuggling, claiming there was lack of evidence to prosecute him. After he was released, images emerged on social media of Bija being welcomed in Zawiyya, including by another notorious trafficker Mohamed Kushlaf. The move has provoked outrage and dismay from many international actors.
