Violence erupts in and around Zawiyya

On 17 July, the headquarters of the Stability Support Agency (SSA) in Zawiyya – Abu Sora was stormed and occupied by militias of Muhammed al-Baroun aka al-Far.

On 18 July, a number of Zawiyya citizens, including Nobles & Elders representatives, demanded an apology and Emad Trabelsi’s resignation in response to his statements that the Ministry of Interior has no control over Zawiyya. They called on Prime Minister Abdul Hameed Dabaiba to intervene immediately.

On the 18-19 July, two men were murdered in Zawiyya within 12 hours. First, on 18 July in the early evening, a man was killed in a targeted attack on Refinery Road in Zawiyya. The attack was carried out by al-Far’s militiamen. As a result, the various militias in the city mobilized their troops. Later that night, a member of al-Far’s Anti Security Threat Agency was killed on the road to Bir al-Ghanem.

On 21 July, a young man belonging to the al-Far militia was deliberately murdered in Zawiyya by several shots to the head. The man was wanted in connection with eight murders.
