On 9 June, just after midnight, the Zintani-led Public Security Force established a checkpoint at al Qadisiyah Island, the crossing of two important streets – al-Jamahirya Street and Bin Ashour Street – in central Tripoli. This was a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement and Rada mobilised in response.
In the course of the fighting, Rada and the Judicial police seized the terrain around Tripoli University, the Medical Centre, and part of al-Sikka Road, but stayed away from the PM Office. A number of members of the Public Security Force and of the 444 were taken prisoner by Rada. Several armored vehicles were destroyed. There is no reliable figure about casualties.
Later on the morning of 9 June, the fighting calmed down, although some minor, brief skirmishes continued for some time. The General Staff deployed the 166th Guard and Protection Battalion and the 222nd (Misrata) Brigade to separate the belligerent parties and to monitor the truce. At about noon, a ceasefire was agreed.
The Government of National Unity’s (GNU) Ministry of Defense announced it had stabilized the situation in Tripoli and enforced a ceasefire after ‘lawless elements’ violated agreed-upon security arrangements. The ministry stated that after monitoring ‘sudden movements’, its intervention led to the withdrawal of the violating parties. It affirmed its commitment to the Presidential Council as the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army and the Temporary Committee for Security and Military Arrangements. The Ministry praised its forces’ discipline and warned against future violations, promising to take necessary measures to ensure security and oversee redeployment.
Rada warned that any new movement of Public Security Forces´ vehicles outside the Hay Andalus neighborhood would be considered an immediate target. During the day, the situation in Tripoli remained calm.
