On 26 February, the US Air Force carried out an aerial activity in Libya ‘aimed at fostering east-west military integration and enhancing air defense and air traffic control capabilities.’ According to the US Embassy, this event represents another important step towards the goal of reunifying Libya’s military institutions and demonstrates the US commitment to unity and stability in Libya. US AFRICOM said that during the joint training mission near Sirte, two U.S. B-52H Stratofortress aircraft from the 2nd Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., transited Libyan airspace while Libyan and U.S. Joint Tactical Air Controllers demonstrated how they would jointly guide the B-52s to conduct a simulated mission. The training reportedly had pilots from both the Libyan Army and the Libyan National Army (LNA) taking part in the exercise.
