The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) released a statement soon after the House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Aqeela Saleh and the High State Council (HSC) Head Khaled Mishri held a meeting in Cairo on 5 January. UNSMIL called on the HoR and HSC to promptly agree on the basis for presidential and parliamentary elections. The US Embassy in Libya released a series of tweets welcoming the meeting and communiqué, stating that it ‘leaves no reason to delay setting an early date for parliamentary and presidential elections’. France also released a statement supporting both the Saleh-Mishri meeting and the UN’s call for the two leaders to finalise the framework for elections.
