On 18 May, the Presidential Council (PC), as Commander-in-Chief, in cooperation with UNSMIL, formed a truce committee ‘building on the fragile peace reached last week’ and held its first meeting. The committee is headed by Libyan Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Muhammed al-Haddad. It aims to establish a permanent ceasefire, protect civilians, and agree on security arrangements for Tripoli. UNSMIL stated this reflects a commitment to avoid escalation and adhere to international law and welcomed the PC’s leadership and the efforts of all parties involved in maintaining the truce and promoting peace. It has been welcomed by many international actors.
