On 28 December 2022, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) released a statement rejecting ‘fake news’ that UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Abdoulaye Bathily was planning to announce a new roadmap and form a new Libyan government. UNSMIL said the disinformation was ‘aimed at generating confusion’ and that UNSMIL’s role was ‘not to impose but to support a Libyan-Libyan solution’. According to UNSMIL’s tweets, Bathily has ‘stress[ed] that any roadmap should be designed through inclusive dialogue among Libyan stakeholders acting in full respect of the rights, interests and aspirations of all Libyan people to be governed by legitimate leadership and institutions’. UNSMIL called for all parties to refrain from actions that would threaten Libyan stability, remarking that the best sources for credible and accurate information about the SRSG’s activities were UNSMIL’s official website and social media.
