On 3 September, the UN Support Mission for Libya (UNSMIL), issued a statement expressing ‘grave concern about ongoing armed clashes, including the alleged use of indirect fire’, in Salah al-Din, a ‘densely populated neighbourhood’ in Tripoli. It called for the immediate cessation of hostilities, reminding ‘all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure’. UNSMIL also called on the relevant authorities ‘to assume their responsibilities in ensuring the protection of civilians and in exercising control over their respective units’.
