UNSC extends mandate of EU’s Operation Irini

On 3 June, the UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted resolution 2365 (2022) renewing the authority of Member States and regional organisations to inspect vessels off Libya’s coast suspected to be violating the UN arms embargo – effectively extending the mandate of the EU naval Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 14 in favour to none against, with only Russia abstaining. Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzya, claimed that the operation had been largely ineffective in implementing Libya’s arms embargo and had failed to reduce smuggling.
