Trabelsi meets with Italian counterpart in Rome

On 27 February, the Government of National Unity (GNU) Minister of Interior Emad Trabelsi, and his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi, met in Rome. According to the GNU, they discussed updates on the illegal immigration file, ways to strengthen security cooperation and joint coordination mechanisms, and achieving a comprehensive approach to combat migration in accordance with the commitments of the two countries. Piantedosi told the Italian Senate that the meeting focused on consolidating cooperation initiatives with Libya, which include ‘preventing departures that put human lives at risk to the constant commitment in search and rescue missions according to international law, the strengthening of the humanitarian corridors and assisted voluntary repatriations, with the full involvement of international humanitarian institutions, such as IOM and UNHCR.’
